My passion for the intersection of medicine and technology has driven me to explore innovative solutions in primary care and patient optimization. Since my interview and direct exposure at UC San Diego School of Medicine in late September 2024, I have been certain that UCSD is the perfect place for me to pursue my medical education. Seven months ago, I independently began this machine learning project in October 2024 as a way to contribute to the evolving landscape of AI-driven healthcare solutions specific to the San Diego and broader California community. It involved technolgical aspects but more so my growing experience shadowing primary care offices and listening to challenges phsycians are feeling to provide for their patients. My journey with this project has reinforced to me the impact patient minded technology can have in uncovering primary care insights in San Diego and bridging healthcare inequities across the state. This further fuels my belief that UCSD is the primary place with the tools and opportunities to grow my contributions and further my aspiration of integrating cutting-edge technology with compassionate, patient-centered medicine. What orginally drew me most to UCSD is its culture of innovation and its embrace of 21st century tools for advancing patient care. I have been particularly inspired by the work of Dr. Ideker in using ML to predict tumor responses to chemotherapy, as well as Dr. Tai-Seale’s research on generative AI’s role in improving physician-patient communication. The opportunity to learn in an environment that actively pushes the boundaries of medical technology solidifies my commitment to UCSD as the sole institution where I hope to grow as a physician.
